Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced a pair of transactions that impact their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight's game against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Bragan Field at 7:05 p.m.
Left-handed starting pitcher Chipper Smith has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to August 20, with a left hamstring strain. This is the second time Smith has been placed on the disabled list in the second half with this injury, and he had to leave his start on Tuesday early in the first inning. Smith with Jacksonville this season is 3-4 with a 4.27 ERA in 14 starts.
In a corresponding move, right-handed starting pitcher Trevor Williams has been transferred from High-A Jupiter to Jacksonville. Williams this season is 8-6 with a 2.79 ERA in 23 starts for Jupiter, and was named a 2014 Florida State League Midseason All-Star.
At the time of his promotion, Williams has the third best ERA in the Florida State League (2.73), and is also fifth in the league in lowest walks per nine innings (2.02).
Williams was selected by the Marlins in the second round (44th overall pick) of the 2013 draft out of Arizona State University. Williams is listed by Baseball America as the Marlins No. 11 prospect coming into the 2014 season, and MLB.com has Williams as the No. 6 Marlins prospect.
Williams will make his Double-A debut tonight, as he starts against the Blue Wahoos at Bragan Field.
Williams starts tonight for the Suns while the Blue Wahoos will send out right-hander Michael Lorenzen (4-6, 3.01).
