HOOVER, Ala. -- Making his Southern League return after a five-start stint in Class-AAA, Mike Prochaska weaved a four-hit complete game masterpiece, lifting the Montgomery Biscuits (36-23; 71-58) to a 6-1 victory over the Birmingham Barons (25-34; 57-72) in a brisk two-hour, nine-minute affair on Thursday night at Regions Park.

The victory kept the Biscuits in a first place tie with Jacksonville on top of the South Division with 11 games remaining in the season. Coincidentally, the Suns defeated Mississippi by the same 6-1 score.

Demoted to Montgomery after righthander Jeff Niemann came off the disabled list to rejoin the Durham Bulls rotation, Prochaska (6-7) became the first pitcher in the Southern League this season to throw two complete games. His first was a six-hit shutout of Mobile on June 22.

Prior to this season, the North Carolina State product had never thrown a complete game in his career.

The Biscuits offense battered young Birmingham starter Kyle McCulloch (1-1) for nine hits and six runs (five earned) in only 2 2/3 innings. John Jaso began the barrage in the opening frame with a two-run homer, his twelfth roundtripper of the season. The All-Star catcher combined with shortstop Reid Brignac to drive in five of the six Biscuits runs.

Birmingham's only score came in the bottom of the first, with Chris Getz singling home Adam Shabala to briefly cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Barons threatened again in the fourth inning with Getz and Shawn Garrett collecting back-to-back one-out singles. Prochaska responded by setting down the final 17 batters of the game in succession. In the process, the southpaw lowered his ERA from 4.29 to 4.01, walking none and striking out five.

Having won the first four games of the five-game series, the Biscuits will attempt to complete the sweep on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Righthander Tony Peguero (0-1, 3.94) receives the start for the Biscuits, opposed by Birmingham All-Star righthander Jack Egbert (12-8, 2.95).
