Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Pedro Florimon saw the low fastball squirt past Lakewood catcher Joel Naughton. Instantaneously, the Shorebirds shortstop began sprinting for home plate. Seconds later, he slid safely into the dish, and Delmarva walked off with victory.

Winning on a wild pitch? The 'Birds will take it.

With two outs in the ninth inning of a 1-1 stalemate, Florimon came home from third to give Delmarva their second straight victory, their third in the last four games. The Dominican infielder doubled with one out in the ninth, advanced to third on Matt Angle's groundout, and advanced the final 90 feet with David Cash at bat as Delmarva's last chance before extra innings.

Each team scored a run in the fourth inning, but that was all either offense could muster up until the ninth. In the top of final frame, Lakewood threatened to re-take the lead. Joel Naughton doubled with one out to give the BlueClaws a base-runner. With two down, D'Arby Myers singled to center field. Lakewood manager Steve Roadcap waived Naughton around third, but Angle fired a laser from shallow center to home plate, gunning down the potential go-ahead run to end the inning. Joe Esposito was the beneficiary of Angle's perfect throw, earning the win for Delmarva in relief.

Once again, the story for the Shorebirds was the pitching staff. Starter Luis Noel went the first five innings, Sean Gleason took the reigns for three, and Esposito pitched the ninth. Together, they held Lakewood to just one run on eight hits, pitching around three Delmarva errors.

Joe Nowicki, Tyler Henson, and Wally Crancer all registered multi-hit games for the Shorebirds, with Nowicki leading the way for the home team's offense with a triple and a double. A Michael Durant solo homer was responsible for the lone Lakewood score, as the BlueClaws stranded eight runners on the base paths over the course of the evening.

Delmarva strives for the sweep of Lakewood on Sunday afternoon, a 2:05 first pitch at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
