Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - In a matchup of first-place teams, the Delmarva Shorebirds outlasted the Augusta GreenJackets 3-1 on a wild Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Brenan Hanifee (3-1) earned a win in his fifth straight Quality Start for the Shorebirds (20-8), allowing one run on six hits in seven innings while walking one and striking out five. It was Hanifee's third straight start of seven innings.

Jason Bahr (2-2) took the loss for the GreenJackets (18-9), giving up just two runs on four hits in six innings. Reed Hayes pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for his third save of the year.

After Augusta jumped in front on a first-inning solo home run from Manuel Geraldo, Delmarva got that run back on an unnerving play in the home half of the first. Kivin Moesquit led off with a line drive to left center. Both Jean Angomas from left and Heliot Ramos from center went after the ball at full speed. Angomas appeared to have the ball in his glove but collided head on with Ramos, jarring the ball loose and allowing Moesquit to race all the way around with an inside-the-park home run to tie it at 1-1.

Angomas stayed on the ground for about 15 minutes and was taken off the field in an ambulance. Later reports indicated he suffered a concussion but was otherwise fine. Ramos, meanwhile, stayed in the game for another inning before exiting in the second.

In the third, Moesquit helped the Shorebirds manufacture a go-ahead run. He bunted his way on for a leadoff single and promptly stole second base. Mason McCoy grounded him over to third, then T.J. Nichting hit a grounder off the hands to third base. Moesquit broke for the plate on the throw to first and slid in ahead of the return throw home, putting the Shorebirds up 2-1.

Due to the ripple effects of the Angomas-Ramos collision, the GreenJackets forfeited their designated hitter by moving Orlando Garcia to second base as part of a mass lineup shift, resulting in the pitcher ending up in the first slot in the batting order. Starting pitcher Bahr came to the plate twice, never swinging the bat and striking out looking both times. In the seventh, Rob Calabrese came to pinch-hit for Bahr with two outs and a man on second, but Hanifee coaxed a groundout to short to complete another gem.

Delmarva tacked on one more run in the eighth. Will Robertson and Moesquit led off with back-to-back singles, and Robertson moved up to third on a long flyout from McCoy. Nichting then hit a grounder to first for a potential double play, but Ryan Kirby threw it into left field, allowing Robertson to score and make it 3-1.

Jeffry Para drew a two-out walk in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate and relief pitcher Peter Lannoo to the on-deck circle. Tyler Brown was unable to extend the game, though, flying out to right to end it.

Moesquit's inside-the-park home run was his second such of the year and first leadoff home run for any Shorebird; he finished 3-for-3 with the solo homer, a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Nichting picked up two RBIs despite finishing 0-for-4.

Geraldo went 2-for-4 with a home run and RBI to lead the GreenJackets. Para reached all four times he came to bat, going 2-for-2 with a single, double, walk, and hit-by-pitch.

The win was the Shorebirds' eighth in their last nine games and makes them the first SAL team to 20 wins in 2018.

The Shorebirds and GreenJackets get back on the horse on Saturday night. Gray Fenter (2-1, 2.84) will make his first start of the season for Delmarva against Augusta's Garrett Cave (0-0, 3.50). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. Saturday is a Hit the Books Game presented by Dr. James M. Crouse at the Brace place, plus Q105 postgame fireworks courtesy of the Delaware State Education Association. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
