Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - Tuesday was an up and down day for Redbirds outfielder Skip Schumaker. He started the day being optioned to Memphis from St. Louis but ended the day hitting a walk-off single to send the Redbirds to a 7-6 victory over New Orleans.

Memphis entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 6-2 but scored five runs in the ninth inning to win their second straight game. Chris Duncan started the rally with a double into the right-centerfield gap. After a Michel Hernandez walk Travis Hanson singled through the left side to load the bases. The Redbirds had left the bases loaded twice earlier in the game but the third time was a charm. Kevin Estrada walked to score Duncan from third and John Nelson snapped a 0-for-18 slump with a two-RBI single. After a Timo Perez sacrifice and a Junior Spivey strikeout Schumaker delivered the game winning hit, a flair down the left field line that landed just out of the reach of an outstretched Tyrell Godwin. Schumaker entered the game in the fourth inning for Larry Bigbie and went 3-for-3 with a double and the two game winning RBI. Duncan and Perez also had three-hit nights and Estrada drove in a pair of runs in the win. Mike Vento went 3-for-4 with a home run and Wiki Gonzalez drove in three runs for the Zephyrs.

John Riedling (1-0) earned the win with a spotless ninth in his Redbirds debut. The right-hander fanned two of the three batters he faced. Memphis starter Anthony Reyes pitched six innings and allowed three runs on five hits with a season-high eight strikeouts. Kevin Gryboski (1-3) took the loss after allowing the winning run to score in the ninth. New Orleans starter Kyle Denney allowed two runs on six hits with six walks and five strikeouts. The Z's used five pitchers for the second consecutive night.

Memphis and New Orleans will play in the season's second Businessperson's Special tomorrow afternoon. Right-hander John Webb (0-3) will head to the hill for the Redbirds. New Orleans will start southpaw Billy Traber (0-0). First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.
