Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Eastlake, OH.- The Shorebirds rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth to score four times and dramatically prevail 7-5 on Tuesday night over the Captains. Trailing 5-4 with two outs, Joe Nowicki singled up the middle off Lake County closer Vinnie Pestano to tie the ballgame at five. A batter later, Joe Mahoney's screaming line drive to center field was misplayed by Lake County's Roman Pena into an RBI triple that propelled Delmarva to a 6-5 lead. After adding another run on the fourth Lake County error of the evening, closer Mick Mattaliano came on to finish off the Captains with a perfect ninth inning and earned his 17th save.

Aubrey Miller kept the Shorebirds in the game with four scoreless innings in relief, picking up his first win of the season for Delmarva. Starter Robert Neigebauer tossed the first four innings. Neigebauer had one rough inning, surrendering a grand slam to Lake County's Lucas Montero amidst a five-run third inning for the Captains.

But in two games (18 total innings) in the series, Lake County has only scored in two innings, as the Delmarva pitching staff has found a groove in the second half. With the save, Mattaliano extended his consecutive innings without allowing an earned run streak to 19.2. The Shorebirds jumped out to a 2-0 in the first on Nowicki's RBI double and Ryan Adams' RBI grounder, but Captains starter Chris Archer settled down and did not allow another hit after the first in his five innings of work. Mahoney went 3-5 to lead the Delmarva offense, while Nowicki was 2-5 with two RBI. Delmarva begins the road trip with back-to-back two-run triumphs over Lake County, and the Shorebirds will seek the sweep of the Captains Wednesday night at 7:05.
