Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - The Drive (43-33, 3-3) scored a run in each of the first two innings in the series opener Tuesday night versus the GreenJackets (45-30, 4-2). But it would be all the offense could muster as three Augusta pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts in their 8-2 victory.
Jered Stanley gave Greenville a 1-0 lead in their first at bat after Chance Corgan retired the first two batters of the inning. Following consecutive ground outs by Che-Hsuan Lin and Ryan Kalish, Yamaico Navarro singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, setting up Stanley's run-scoring base hit.
An inning later the Drive scored another run with two outs in the inning. Oscar Tejeda reached base on a double and scored as Kristopher Negron tallied his first of two hits in the ballgame two batters later.
That would be the only two runs the Drive could plate as Corgan, along with relievers Ryan Paul and Daniel Turpen held Greenville scoreless over the final seven innings.
Meanwhile, the Augusta offense broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs. A fielding error by Ryan Kalish on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Baker, allowed Nick Noonan and Shane Jordan to score.
The GreenJackets would pull away in the bottom of the eighth, sending 10 batters to the plate en route to scoring four runs off reliever Jordan Craft, all coming with two outs in the inning. Noonan, Thomas Neal, and Jackson Williams all recorded RBI-singles with Neal knocking in a pair.
Capellan (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs - three earned - on seven hits and a walk in 4.0 innings. Paul (1-1) earned the victory out of the bullpen for Augusta, striking out five in 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings in relief, while Turpen earned his fifth save.
The Drive won't have much time to dwell on their loss, as the second game of the three-game series is scheduled for 10:35 AM on Wednesday. A pair of right-handers will square off as Greenville will send Terumasa Matsuo, as Augusta counters with Oliver Odle.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Sunday, June 29th. The seven-game home stand will have an "All-American Fest" theme. For more information regarding single-game tickets, ticket plans, group outings and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
