Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

GARY, Ind. - The Sioux Falls Canaries lost their bid for a series sweep of the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 2-1pitcher's duel and losing for the first time in six games at the U.S. Steel Yard.

The loss marked the end of a 13-game road trip on which the Canaries went 6-7. Their overall record dropped to 37-50 with 13 games remaining in the 100-game season.

RailCats starting pitcher Morgan Coombs (5-2) kept Canaries hitters off balance with a mix of pitches and a career-high 10 strikeouts. He held the Canaries to one run over 8 1/3 innings pitched and did not walk a man.

Kyle Vazquez (2-3) took the loss despite a sharp outing and a quality start. He yielded only one run and three hits in six innings while striking out a career-best nine strikeouts. He walked one.

Gary SouthShore grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Adam Klein led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Mike Massaro's double. They did not score again until Massaro singled home and insurance run in the eighth inning.

The Canaries mounted a comeback attempt in the ninth. After loading the bases with one out, J.P. Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1, but closer Ian Durham induced Jake Taylor into a groundout to end the game. Durham recorded his sixth save.

Canaries hitters collected just five hits, all singles, but Nick Van Stratten extended a hitting streak to 11 games.

After an off day on Monday, the Canaries open a six-game home stand against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20 at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's Give Back Tuesday. Fans who bring a canned food item to donate to Feeding South Dakota can purchase two tickets for the price of one. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
