Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Sox drop the last game of the series to the Lemurs, 5-2 in ten innings at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. Starters for both sides kept the scoring low but late hitting came in the ninth and tenth. The ballpark hosted 1,612 fans in a game that lasted two minutes under three hours.
Ryan Mitchell took the mound for Amarillo and after allowing two in scoring position in the first inning, he would keep Laredo hitless until the fifth. The Sox also had two hits in the first inning off starter Sean Tracey, but would not score the runners. Cory Patton doubled in the third inning and then was picked off second by the catcher, Brian Peterson. Amarillo struck in the fourth, starting with a hit-by-pitch allowing Jorge Delgado on-base. KC Serna would single and then Chris Grossman's pop-up landed between three players in left-center field, scoring Delgado to make it 1-0.
The Lemurs came back in the top of the fifth with a single and double to start the inning. Two batters after the two hits, Jimmy Mojica hit a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game. John Allen doubled for his second time of the game during the sixth but would be caught out in a pickle between second and third on a ball hit back to the pitcher. Laredo went ahead in the seventh after Mike Provencher led off the inning with a triple. The next batter, Garrett Rau drove him in with a fly-out to right field.
For the Lemurs, Mark Haynes faced one batter in the seventh and got Joe Weik to fly-out with two base runners. Haynes went on to pitch the eighth and allowed no hits with one strikeout. Josh Giles pitched in relief of the Sox' starter for the eighth and allowed a hit and a walk, but struck out his last batter. The first two outs of the ninth were a strikeout and a groundout forced by Erik Draxton who then allowed two hits but struck out another batter for the third out. In the bottom the ninth, Amarillo sent up pinch-hitter, Jason Martin after the first two batters were retired by Chad Povich. Martin singled and then Cory Patton hit a shot off the left field wall, tying the game 2-2. Patton had four hits; two of them were doubles in five at-bats.
Draxton stayed in the game for the tenth and the first batter was John Allen. On the first pitch of the inning, Allen hit a line drive toward second base which resulted in what appeared to be a diving catch by Trey Ford, as ruled out by the home plate umpire. But when the Sox' second baseman got up, Ford double-clutched to second after losing the ball from his glove when hitting the ground. The throw to first was in-time but the umpire ruled that Kyle Nichols was off the bag on the catch. A bunt moved over the runner, Allen was pinch-ran for, and the run was scored by Stephen Douglas' second hit of the game, making the score 3-2. Harrison Kain singled and would score for his second time when Mike Provencher doubled to right-center, scoring Douglas as well. Provencher tried to get his second triple on the same play but was thrown out from a relay by Chris Valencia and KC Serna to Jason Martin.
Seth Lintz (S, 1) closed out the tenth in order for Laredo while striking out two. Sean Tracey pitched six and two third innings and allowed a run on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Ryan Mitchell went seven innings for the Sox and gave up two runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Chad Povich (W, 2-2) had allowed the game-tying hit in the ninth but earned the victory while giving up two hits with one strikeout recorded. Erik Draxton (L, 1-5) had three runs given up on six hits while striking out two. Both teams commit an error as the Sox end their four-game winning streak.
With the loss, the Sox move to 45-42, while the Lemurs move to 46-41 on the season. Monday, the Sox get a break before traveling to Grand Prairie for their last series against a division opponent. The set will last three games against the Airhogs before the Sox play their final three games at home in the upcoming weekend against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
