Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, IN - Morgan Coombs outdueled Kyle Vazquez in an entertaining and well pitched game on Sunday afternoon as the RailCats took a 2-1 victory over Sioux Falls. The 'Cats improved to 48-37 while the Canaries dropped to 37-50.
Coombs set a career-high with 10 strikeouts but was removed from the game after Reggie Abercrombie doubled with one out in the ninth inning. After reliever Estevan Uriegas walked Tim Pahuta on five pitches, Ian Durham entered and hit Jared Clark with the first pitch he threw to load the bases.
J.P. Ramirez then hit a sac fly to left to score Abercrombie from third and bring the game to 2-1. Ian Durham recovered to get Jake Taylor to ground out to short to end the game and earn Coombs his fifth win of the season.
Morgan allowed one run on five hits and did not walk a batter in eight and a third innings.
The RailCats got on the board in the bottom of the first when Adam Klein walked to start the inning off against Sioux Falls starter Kyle Vazquez. Klein immediately stole second and came home when Mike Massaro doubled deep down the left field line to take a 1-0 RailCats lead.
The early part of the ballgame was dominated by the starters as Kyle Vazquez and Morgan Coombs combined for 12 strikeouts through the first three innings.
The RailCats added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when the duo of Adam Klein and Mike Massaro came through again. Klein rolled an infield single to the right side and moved to second on a wild pitch by Sioux Falls reliever Matt Daly. Then Massaro delivered an RBI single to right scoring Klein to make it 2-0.
The insurance loomed quite large as the Canaries nearly rallied back in the ninth inning against Coombs and the RailCats bullpen combination of Estevan Uriegas and Ian Durham.
Kyle Vazquez, making just his third start of the season, also set a career-high in strikeouts with nine. His previous high was eight when he pitched in the San Francisco Giants organization. Vazquez left on the wrong side of a 1-0 deficit after six innings. He allowed three hits and one walk.
The RailCats have an off-day on Monday then will play a doubleheader with the Wichita Wingnuts on Tuesday night beginning at 5:10 p.m.
It's Gluttony Night! Fans can purchase All-You-Can-Eat Tickets and enjoy two games for the price of one during Tuesday's doubleheader. It's also Two for Tuesday as fans can buy two and get two free on tickets!
