Wingnuts Edge RedHawks in Rubber Game

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (58-28) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (55-32) 3-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Five Wingnuts' pitchers, including newly-signed starter James Giulietti, combined on a three-hitter in the victory.

Giulietti allowed two earned runs on just two hits over six innings to pick up the win. Guilietti walked two and struck out eight while throwing 99 pitches.

Jake Kahaulelio hit a solo home run to left-center with one out in the bottom of the first inning to give the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jared McDonald pulled a two-run triple down the right field line that extended the lead to 3-0.

From the third inning through the fifth, Giulietti retired 10 batters in a row.

Fargo's only runs came in the top of the sixth on a two-out, two-run home run off the batter's eye in center field from Nic Jackson.

Wichita's bullpen combined for three shutout innings. Nick Walters escaped a first and third situation with one out in the top of the eighth when Jackson grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Josh Dew threw a perfect top of the ninth to earn his 22nd save of the year.

RedHawks' starter Ethan Opsahl took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings. Opsahl walked two and struck out three.

Giulietti (pronounced juh-LET-ee) was signed prior to Sunday's game. The 24-year-old left-hander was 4-3 with a 1.56 ERA for the United League's Fort Worth Cats this season. Giulietti struck out 52 in 57.2 innings for the Cats and is in his third overall year of professional baseball. A native of Plainview, NY, Giulietti played four years of college baseball at Binghamton University where he earned America East Conference Pitcher of the Year honors as a junior in 2010.

With 14 games left in the regular season, Wichita trimmed its magic number to clinch the American Association Central Division down to five over the Gary SouthShore RailCats and three over the Lincoln Saltdogs.

The Wingnuts take Monday off and open a four-game series against the RailCats on Tuesday evening. Tuesday is a double header with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:10 p.m. at U.S. Steel Yard. Chris Smith and Justin Klipp are Wichita's scheduled starters in the twinbill.
