Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - After having their best month of the season in July, the Sioux Falls Canaries opened August with a 7-6 loss in the rubber game of three-game against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles at Sioux Falls Stadium on Thursday night.
The Canaries (30-41) lost their only interleague series of the year with a Can-Am League opponent.
The Canaries rallied from a four-run deficit on the strength of three solo home runs from the middle of the lineup, but Aigles closer Nick Sarianides shut down the Canaries in order in the ninth inning for his 11th save. Jared Clark hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his 15th of the year and first since July 9, and Tim Pahuta pulled a ball over the right field wall in the sixth for his league-leading 20th round-tripper of the year. And Reggie Abercrombie rocketed a no-doubter for his first home run with the Canaries in the eighth.
Trois-Rivieres (31-38) never trailed after Drew Miller led off the third inning with a solo home run to break a 3-3 tie. Brett Flowers later doubled and scored on an error, and David Cooper added a run-scoring single. Flowers added an RBI base hit in the fourth for a 7-3 margin. He finished 3-for-5.
Mitchell Clegg (4-4) suffered his first loss since July 15. He surrendered seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out two.
Four Canaries relievers - Kirk Clark, Jack Van Leur, Jordan Whatcott and Alan DeRatt - held Trois-Rivieres scoreless over the last four innings.
Jeff Shields (7-7) earned the win for Trois-Rivieres, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out one.
J.P. Ramirez led all Canaries hitters with a 3-for-5 attack, and Van Stratten went 2-for-5.
The Canaries open a three-game home series against the Kansas City T-Bones at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, August 2 at Sioux Falls Stadium. Friday Fireworks follow the game, sponsored by Orthopedic Institute and All-Star Fireworks. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
