Wingnuts Win Final Game in El Paso

EL PASO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts (46-25) defeated the El Paso Diablos (22-47) 11-9 at Cohen Stadium on Wednesday night.

Wichita scratched out a run in the top of the first inning on an Abel Nieves bases loaded walk and held the lead through the end of the night.

In the top of the second, Jared McDonald drew a one-out walk and advanced to second when Diablos' starter Kevin Cooper balked. Two batters later, Jake Kahaulelio lined a single to center that scored McDonald and made it 2-0. Kahaulelio went to third on John Rodriguez's hit-and-run single through the left side. C.J. Ziegler and Brent Clevlen followed with back-to-back RBI singles.

McDonald plated Madison Beaird with a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the third to stretch Wichita's lead to 5-0.

The Diablos scored three unearned runs against Wingnuts' starter Anthony Capra in the bottom of the third. With first and second and one out, Jose Garcia doubled down the right field line to drive in Maikol Gonzalez. Welington Dotel followed with an RBI groundout to second that brought in Oscar Mesa. Garcia scored the third run of the inning on Anthony D'Alfonso's RBI single to left.

Wichita responded with four runs in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Nieves singled up the middle to score Rodriguez and Ziegler. Clevlen went to third on Nieves' base hit and was awarded home plate when center fielder Gabriel Suarez's throw bounced into the third base stands. Bowden drove in Nieves two batters later with a line drive double down the left field line.

Ziegler hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth that scored Kahaulelio with the Wingnuts' 10th run.

Juan Apodaca's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth and Garcia's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth helped the Diablos cut the lead to 10-6.

El Paso scored three two-out runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull within one before Josh Dew struck out pinch hitter Sergio Burruel with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Kahaulelio hit a two-out, solo home run down the left field line in the top of the ninth to provide the Wingnuts with an insurance run at 11-9.

Dew retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to finish the four-out save.

Capra earned the win for the Wingnuts, allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits over five and one-third innings. Capra walked three and struck out six.

Cooper took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits in three-plus innings. Cooper walked five and struck out two.

Andrew Aizenstadt worked one and two-thirds scoreless relief innings for Wichita. For a second straight night, all nine of Wichita's starters reached base at least once. Kahaulelio finished with four runs scored. Kahaulelio, Rodriguez, Ziegler, and Clevlen all had multiple hits.

The Wingnuts travel east for the final 10 games of their 16-game road trip. Wichita opens a three-game series against the Can-Am League's Newark Bears on Friday, August 2nd. First pitch at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Central Time. Chris Smith starts for Wichita.
