AMARILLO, TX - The home team takes the four-game set with a 10-4 victory over the Airhogs at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. An attendance of 1,864 was the official record in a game that lasted two hours and forty-three minutes. The Sox had ten hits to Grand Prairie's eight while the Airhogs committed an error in the field.
Starters Jason Mitchell for the Sox and Gabriel Garcia for the Airhogs put away both lineups in order for the first inning. But in the top of the second, Grand Prairie loaded the bases with a double, walk, and a single. Two batters later, Yasutsugu Nishimoto doubled to right center, driving in all three runners. Amarillo's offense would be held hitless until the fifth inning with two outs. The Airhogs scored another run in the top of the fifth on a solo shot from Kenny Held, making it 4-0. Andrew Romo replaced Mitchell out of the bullpen, recording two outs in the fifth and all outs in the sixth while hitting a batter, walking another, and striking out two.
Garcia would walk three batters in the fifth as the Sox scored eight runs on six hits. Turning the deficit into a tie ball game, KC Serna hit a grand slam for his first homerun of the season. Jason Martin came up and doubled, Chris Valencia walked, and then Joe Weik doubled in both runners. Weik would score on a Jorge Delgado RBI-single and then Chris Grossman doubled off relief pitcher, Jakob Cunningham on the first pitch he saw. The score was 8-4 going into the sixth in which a hit by Brandon Jones turned into him being thrown out trying to steal second. The next two batters were put away with a strikeout and groundout induced by Cunningham.
Kristhiam Linares was the third pitcher used for Amarillo as he pitched a one-two-three inning in the seventh. The bottom half started with a single to left by Jason Martin, who eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-4. Chris Valencia had reached on a walk but was picked off by Grand Prairie's catcher, Angel Flores at first base. Jorge Delgado hit a Texas-leaguer to right on a full count, knocking Cunningham out of the game. David Quinowski came in and got the last out of the seventh by ringing up Chris Grossman.
John Holdzkom came out of the bullpen and struck out the side in the eighth. Quinowski, for the Airhogs would start the bottom of the inning by allowing a solo homerun to Cory Patton for his fourth of the year. Two Sox batters were then struck out, followed by a fly-out to center. Josh Giles allowed the first batter of the ninth on with a walk but then got a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to end the game.
Jason Mitchell received a no-decision in his four and a third innings pitched while giving up four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Gabriel Garcia (L, 0-1) allowed his eight runs all in the fifth on six hits as he lasted two outs and ten batters during the inning. Garcia struck out three and walked four in his start. Andrew Romo (W, 1-0) went an inning and two thirds while giving up no runs on one hit for his first win.
With the win, the Sox improve to 38-30, while the Airhogs fall to 37-33 on the season. Friday, the Sox host Laredo for the beginning of a three-game series against the Lemurs. Game time is set for 7:05pm with the pre-game show beginning at 6:55pm.
