Birds Go 12 Innings In 3-2 Victory

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (26-15) came away with a 3-2 victory over the El Paso Diablos (22-18) after 12 innings in front of 3,613 on Saturday night.

The Birds were the first to get on the scoreboard. In the second inning, Ben Van Iderstine singled and advanced to third on Matt Imwalle's single. Jake Smith walked to load the bases for Damon Lessler. Lessler hit a groundball to Diablos' second baseman Jorge Alvarez. Alvarez made an errant throw to first base allowing Lessler to reach safely and Van Iderstine to score from third giving the Canaries a 1-0 lead.

Matthew Kent hit his fourth home run of the season to lead off the fifth inning for the Diablos. Kent's homer tied the game, 1-1. Evan Conley, Casey Clary, and Albenis Machado followed with consecutive singles to load the bases. Kory Drew hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield allowing Conley to score and give the Diablos a 2-1 lead.

The Canaries came right back in the home half of the fifth inning. Will Smith hit a two out single and Abner Arroyo followed with a standup double to bring home Smith. At the end of five, the game is tied 2-2.

Despite a few threats from both teams, neither could come up with the necessary run to take the lead until the 12th inning. Lessler was hit by a pitch thrown by Diablos' pitcher, Julio Frietas. Lessler advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cameron Coughlan and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Michael Cervera. With two outs in the inning, Lessler came in to score on a throwing error by Diablos' third baseman Evan Conley and the Birds prevailed, 3-2.

Lenny Bays (5-0) earned his fifth win pitching one inning of relief for the Canaries. Julio Frietas (0-1) suffered the loss for the Diablos.

The Canaries go for the sweep in the Sunday game against the Diablos. Sunday is "An Inconvenient Spoof: Global Warming, Heating & Cooling Night," which has been named the minor league promotion of the day by MinorLeagueDugout.com.
