Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
90 feet away from extending the game, the Sioux Falls Canaries couldn't push across the tying run on Friday. The Gary SouthShore RailCats won the opener of the three-game series between the two teams 4-3 at the U.S. Steel Yard.
The Canaries loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning, but RailCats closer Adam Quintana struck out Jabari Henry to end the game.
The RailCats scored all four of their runs in the first inning off of Canaries starter Chad Martin. Martin walked the first four batters he faced, including a bases-loaded walk to Colin Willis.
Sioux Falls manager Mike Meyer removed Martin from the game before Martin recorded an out. He walked all four hitters he faced, allowing four runs.
John Straka entered the game in Martin's place, and allowed three inherited runners to score. RBI singles by Ronnie Mitchell and Wilfredo Gimenez plated the first two; the third scored on a double-play ball.
Canaries pitching was solid from there; Straka and lefty Louis Pollorena combined to throw eight innings without allowing a run.
The Canaries cut the lead in half in the fifth on a two-run home run by Maxx Garrett, his 10th homer of the season.
With two outs in the seventh, the Birds loaded the bases for David Bergin. Bergin drew a walk to score Jordan Smith and cut the RailCats' lead to 4-3. Jabari Henry struck out to end the inning.
The Canaries put a two-out rally together in the ninth. Dan Motl walked and stole second, and Mitch Glasser reached on an infield single. That brought up Bergin, who walked, loading the bases for Henry.
Henry's strikeout was his fourth of the game.
ON DECK
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. Jake Esch will take the mound for the Canaries; Keaton Steele gets the start for Gary SouthShore. Birds fans can listen to the game on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 98.1 FM and AM 1230 KWSN and online on kwsn.com and the KWSN app.
