Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Shorebirds sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 times in the opening frame in a 13-2 thrashing of the Lynchburg Hillcats at the Bank of the James Stadium on Tuesday night.
The win is the fifth in a row for the Shorebirds (31-16) as they scored early and often on the Hillcats (25-22).
The game started with Mason Janvrin beating out an infield single. After a popup, Hudson Haskin bashed a two-run homer to right field, his fifth of the season, and the Shorebirds were off and running with a 2-0 lead. After a strikeout, Ryne Ogren jump-started a two-out rally with a walk and Cristopher Cespedes followed with another free pass. Yorkislandy Alvarez then bounced a single to center to score Ogren with Cespedes moving to third. Andrew Martinez kept the line moving, ripping a double to center, scoring Cespedes. Ramon Rodriguez then joined the party with a single down the right field line, plating two runs. A walk to Janvrin was followed by Hernaiz being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Haskin came through for the second time in the inning, lining a single to center, plating two more runs. TT Bowens put the cherry on top of the frame with a two-run double, making it 10-0 Delmarva.
Lynchburg got one in the third thanks to a two-out RBI single from Ike Freeman to make it a 10-1 contest.
The Hillcats added another in the fifth after Yordys Valdes singled, advanced to third on an error on the play, and then scored on a groundout.
The Shorebirds added three more the rest of the way to close the scoring. Cristopher Cespedes swatted his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the sixth while TT Bowens stroked a solo homer, his fifth, in the eighth, to wrap up the contest.
Jake Lyons (2-1) wrapped his stellar month of June by earning the win in relief. Lyons worked five innings, allowing just an unearned run on two hits and two walks, striking out eight.
Brauny Munoz (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Hillcats after starting and lasting just two-thirds of an inning, giving up seven runs on five hits and two walks, striking out one.
Griffin McLarty started for Delmarva but did not factor into the decision. The righty spun four innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk, striking out six.
In the 13-run onslaught, the Shorebirds set a new season high for runs in an inning (10) while tying their season high for hits in a game (16). Every Shorebird batter scored at least once and six of nine drove in a run. Haskin had two hits and four RBIs alone in the first innings. Bowens finished 3-for-5 with a double, homer and three RBIs while Cespedes was 3-for-4 with a homer and 2 RBI as well. Martinez ripped two doubles in a 2-for-5 night.
Lynchburg was held to six hits from six different players with a double for Yainer Diaz and a triple for Cody Farhat.
The Shorebirds and Hillcats continue their series with a twin bill on Wednesday, June 30. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 5 p.m. with game two to follow thirty minutes after. Delmarva hands the ball to Brandon Young (2-0, 3.58) for game one while Lynchburg counters with Daniel Espino (1-0, 2.10). Game two sees Ignacio Feliz (2-0, 1.15) on the mound for the Shorebirds against Jamie Arias (3-1, 3.12).
