Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
After winning four straight games, the Albuquerque Isotopes (30-26) were utterly destroyed Monday night as the Memphis Redbirds (31-26) pummeled the âTopes pitching staff for a season-high 20 runs on 23 hits in a 20-7 battering at Isotopes Park.
The Redbirds surpassed their season high run total of 14 in the sixth inning, scoring a run in all but two innings and also whopping 10 extra-base knocks on the night and going 13-21 with runners in scoring position after struggling to hit in the clutch in the first two games. A trio of Memphis players collected four RBI apiece, as Tyler Greene, Allen Craig and Daniel Descalso combined for 12 RBI.
Runs weren't the only things in abundance on Monday as 31,267 hot dogs were purchased as part of 50-cent Hot Dog Night, an average of 3.6 per person for the hungry throng of 8,601.
The Redbirds struck quick and often over the first three innings. After securing two outs, starter Brent Leach (3-2) surrendered three straight hits, including a two-run double to Descalso to make it 2-0 âBirds early.
It was only a prelude of things to come, however, as Memphis plated five more tallies in the top of the second to go well ahead 7-0. The Redbirds batted around with seven of the 10 batters sent to the plate reaching base, including the first five.
While Leach exited after 1.2 innings of work, the âTopes pitchers that followed didn't fare much better. Hyang-Nam Choi surrendered three more runs in the third to make it 10-0. Eric Thompson, in his second outing with Albuquerque, proceeded to allow nine more runs over 2.2 innings as the Redbirds touched Thompson for two long balls and added their final run of the game with another shot off Jesus Rodriguez in the eighth inning to complete their mutilation at 20 runs.
The Isotope offense, meanwhile, didn't score until the fifth inning as Oneli Perez (2-1) dealt four scoreless frames. Ivan De Jesus, Jr., who reached base four times, sent an RBI single to center to plate Jamie Hoffmann, who doubled with two outs one batter earlier.
Albuquerque would add a pair in the sixth off a Michael Restovich solo home run and a run-scoring groundout from Nick Green. The âTopes made a mini rally in the ninth with two outs, pushing across four late runs with five straight hits, but it would take much more than that as the Redbirds had a lead that was simply too insurmountable.
Albuquerque will look to get back on the winning track Tuesday behind right-hander Bobby Blevins (0-0, No ERA), who will be making his Triple-A debut against Memphis lefty Ryan Kulik (0-1, 10.13). First pitch is 12:05 PM MT.
The Isotopes wrap up their quick four-game homestand with a Business Person's Special before a much-deserved day off on Wednesday. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
