Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds erupted for a six-run seventh inning to sink the Hickory Crawdads 6-3 on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Down 3-0 in the seventh and with nothing going at the plate, the Shorebirds (10-7, 45-39) needed a jumpstart and got it. Jean Carrillo led off with a walk, then Will Robertson pounded a no-doubt home run to left, his sixth of the year, to trim the deficit to 3-2. Max Hogan then slashed a single to left and Kirvin Moesquit walked, and Cadyn Grenier laid a sac bunt down the third base line to move the runners up to second and third. Zach Jarrett drew the intentional walk to load the bases and bring up Trevor Craport, who lifted a deep fly ball to left for a sac fly to score Hogan and tie the game. Ryan Ripken came up next and with a full count blasted a line drive three-run homer to right, putting the Shorebirds on top 6-3.
The Crawdads (8-8, 38-46) couldn't muster a rally against Cameron Ming (1-2), who rode 2.1 innings and four strikeouts in relief to his first win of the season. Tyree Thompson (4-7) suffered the loss after a blown save, giving up all six runs in just two-thirds of an inning.
Hickory wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first inning. Bubba Thompson singled to center field on the first pitch of the game, and three batters later Yohel Pozo ripped a single to right center, bringing Thompson all the way around to score to make it 1-0.
Delmarva starter Cameron Bishop settled in for five straight scoreless innings, but the Crawdads padded their lead against him in the seventh. Sam Huff ripped a ball down into the left field corner for a one-out double, then after a strikeout, Tyler Ratliff grounded one to third that Trevor Craport misplayed and threw away, allowing Huff to score. After Ming relieved Bishop, Yonny Hernandez singled home Ratliff to put Hickory up 3-0 and set up the Shorebirds' big answer.
The Delmarva bats got Bishop off the hook despite his 11th Quality Start of the year. The southpaw allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in 6.2 innings, walking one and striking out a career-high eight.
Hickory's Jean Casanova tossed 3.2 scoreless innings in a spot start, allowing a pair of hits and four walks while striking out one.
Ripken led the way at the plate again for the Shorebirds, going 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the year and three RBIs. Robertson finished 1-for-4 with the two-run blast, while Jarrett added a double, two walks, and a run.
Tyreque Reed belted two doubles to lead the Crawdads, while Ratliff finished 1-for-3 with a walk and run.
The Shorebirds will go for the series win against the Crawdads on Sunday evening. Brenan Hanifee (7-3, 2.63) will take the hill for Delmarva against Hickory's Alex Eubanks (5-5, 6.15). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. with gates opening at 4:00. On Sunday, the first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a Shorebirds 2018 South Atlantic League All-Stars poster, presented by Delmarva Printing. Sunday is also a Kids Club Game presented by Maryland Excels, Perdue Strike Out Hunger Sunday, Kids Run the Bases presented by Chili's Grill and Bar, and postgame player autograph session. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 4:50 with Will DeBoer and Drew Williams on the call.
