Erie SeaWolves News Release
Erie kicked off the second half with a win thanks to eight early runs in a 9-3 win over Akron.
The RubberDucks scored the game's first run against Keider Montero in the first inning. Jose Tena led off by drawing a walk. He stole second base and advanced to third base on Dillon Dingler's throwing error. He later scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Angel Martinez.
The lead did not last long. Trei Cruz began the first by walking against Ross Carver. Justice Bigbie then blasted a long RBI double off the left-field fence to score Cruz. Two batters later, Andrew Navigato buried an RBI double into the left-field corner, scoring Bigbie. Chris Meyers later scored Navigato on a fielder's choice grounder to first base as Navigato scored ahead of the throw from Joe Naranjo.
Erie extended the lead with five more in the second inning. Gage Workman led off with a double and advanced to third on a base hit by Ben Malgeri. After Malgeri stole second base, Bigbie drove home two more on a two-run single to the opposite field. After Erie loaded the bases on the walk and a hit batter, Meyers singled home two more. Both Bigbie and Meyers drove home three runs each in the first two innings. Danny Serretti tacked on an RBI single, making it 8-1 SeaWolves.
Montero left after throwing 5.1 innings. He (6-2) earned the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Carver (0-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs in 1.2 innings.
Tim Naughton replaced Montero in the sixth with a runner on base and allowed a two-run home run to Johnathan Rodriguez, making it 8-3.
Navigato blasted a solo home run in the seventh inning, extending Erie's lead to 9-3 on his eighth homer.
Tyler Mattison worked a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout in his Double-A debut.
Erie and Akron have a doubleheader scheduled for Friday. The first game is set for 5:05 p.m. with Wilmer Flores opposing Doug Nikhazy. Game two features Ty Madden against Tanner Burns.
