USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Big Start, Road Win

December 2, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks scored four first period goals, and Calvin Vachon made 32 saves during a 4-1 Saturday road win against the Des Moines Buccaneers.

The result moved the two teams into a tie for fifth place in the United States Hockey League Western Conference. The Hawks have two games in hand and have played the fewest times among Western Conference teams.

Waterloo jumped on Des Moines with three goals in the first six minutes of the game. The first came at 2:08, when an initial attempt was knocked down in front of the net. The puck came back to Nick Fascia at the left point, and his shot from above the circle found its way through traffic and into the top corner.

The Hawks then scored twice in the span of 33 seconds starting at 5:18. Jakub Altrichter sped into the offensive zone and behind the Des Moines cage, dropping a pass into the slot for a bang-bang goal by Gavyn Thoreson. Then on the next shift, Thoreson set up John Mustard for a transition tally.

Myles Hilman added one more on the power play at 16:59, scoring from the right circle just a moment before Des Moines was to come back to full strength.

The Hawks were limited to eight shots the rest of the way, but Vachon made the early lead stand up. He and the Hawks penalty killers denied the Buccaneers on more than a minute-and-a-half of two-man advantage power play time late in the second.

Des Moines' Owen West did have a power play breakthrough for the Buccaneers' lone goal at 4:30 of the third. His shot from the right point found the net under the crossbar.

Neither team scored again although both sides had one more power play. Waterloo finished the game with one conversion in three tries, while the Buccaneers were one-for-five. Des Moines outshot the Hawks 33-16.

The Black Hawks continue a sequence of six consecutive games against Western Conference opponents on Friday when they travel to meet the Sioux City Musketeers. Waterloo then hosts a rematch versus Des Moines next Saturday.
