
Friday Rewind: Taking a Look at Last Night in the USHL

Youngstown 3, Muskegon 2
Muskegon held a 2-1 lead after the first period of play, but could not hold on as Youngstown rallied for a 3-2 victory in the second game of the 2023 American Cup played in Rochester, N.Y., Thursday and Friday.
Matvie Gridin scored at 3:39 for his 13th goal of the year to open the scoring, but Youngstown forward Miles Gunty tied it at 10:17. Joe Connor tallied at 14:31 and after 20 minutes of action, Muskegon held a one-goal advantage.
Youngtown took a 3-2 lead after two periods of play on goals after Braiden Clark scored at 6:29 and Gunty got his second of the game at 17:03.
Phantoms netminder Colin Winn shut the door in the third period, stopping all 12 shots he faced as Youngstown upped its record to 14-4-2-0 with the win.
Des Moines 2, Dubuque 1
Ben Kevan had a goal and an assist and netminder Ethan Dahlmeir stopped 21 shots as Des Moines claimed a 2-1 home win over Dubuque Friday.
After a scoreless first period, Lucas St. Louis cashed in on a rebound chance to give the Fighting Saints a 1-0 lead. Lubomir Kupco evened things when he tallied on the power play at 19:04.
Kevan, one of the league's top scoring rookies, got his 11th goal of the year at 3:45 of the third as the Buccaneers moved ahead, 2-1.
Dahlmeir stopped all five shots he faced in the third to preserve the win for Des Moines.
Fargo 5, Sioux City 2
Reid Daavettila scored three times in powering Sioux City to a 5-2 home win over Sioux City Friday night.
Now 17-2-1-0 on the season, the Force remain unbeaten in regulation games at home (7-0-1-0) on the season with the win.
Daavettila got the ball rolling for Fargo when he scored a shorthanded goal at 3:29 of the opening period. Kaden Shahan, who leads the USHL in goals, scored a power play at 4:04 to tie the score and when he scored again three minutes later, the Musketeers had a 2-1 edge. Peter Cisar tied the game at 12:05 and when Lee Parks scored at 15:20, the Force entered the locker room owning a 3-2 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes of action.
Daavettila, who entered the game having scored twice in the previous 19 games, scored an even-strength marker at 16:11 of the second and added an empty-net tally at 17:16 of the third.
Anton Castro had 18 saves for Fargo and Samuel Urban had 33 stops for Sioux City.
Madison 6, Chicago 1
Austin Burnevik scored twice and added an assist in leading Madison to a 6-1 win over Chicago Friday.
The Capitols owned a 2-0 lead early in the first on goals from James Hong at 6:06 and Rainers Rullers at 7:53. Chicago forward Charlie Major replied at 10:38 and end the end of the first the score stood 2-1
The Capitols scored four straight times, once in the second and three times in the third to claim the win. Brendan Lamb scored at 12:44 of the second and Andrew Kuzma scored at 1:06 of the third before Burnevik closed the game out with his 11th of the year at 4:19 and his 12th at 18:24.
Goaltender Carsen Musser had 19 saves for Madison to get the decision.
USA Hockey NTDP 6, Omaha 2
USA Hockey NTDP owned a 37-16 shots on goal advantage and Kamil Bednarik scored twice enroute to a 6-2 win at Omaha Friday.
The NTDP opened up a first-period lead when Bednarik scored at 5:19 and Kristian Epperson tallied at 6:44.
Jamison Sluys responded at 0:37 of the second, but the NTDP regained it's two-goal cushion on a Charlie Pardue goal at 7:00. Sluys struck for his second of the game at 11:07 and at the end of two, the score stood 3-2 in favor of the NTDP.
Teddy Stiga got his eighth of the season at 7:45 to give the NTDP a 4-2 lead. Cole Hutson, at 9:05, and Bednarik, at 16:21, closed out the scoring in the game for the NTDP.
Jack Parsons finished with 14 stops for the NTDP, while Mikhail Yegorov had 31 saves for Omaha.
Green Bay 5, Tri-City 4
Green Bay was able to withstand a furious rally from Tri-City to claim a 5-4 road shootout win Friday night.
Tri-City held a 1-0 lead at the end of the first on a goal from Seth Constance.
The Gamblers got goals from Julian Lutz at 6:54 and Brady O'Malley at 9:48 and at the end of two periods of play held a 2-1 lead.
William Hughes made it 3-1 in favor of Green Bay at 6:38 of the third before Trevor Connelly scored to make it 3-2 at 11:08. Michael DeAngelo's shorthanded marker at 12:42 gave the Gamblers a 4-2 lead, but Connelly's second of the game, which came at 1:41 and another from Cameron Briere at 15:22 sent it into overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the extra session and Green Bay's Lev Katzin ended an eight-round shootout when he was the only player able to score.
Sioux Falls 4, Waterloo 2
Chris Pelosi, J.J. Wiebusch and Beckett Hendrickson all had a goal and an assist as Sioux Falls claimed a 4-2 win at Waterloo Friday.
Wiebusch scored his 10th of the season in the first as the visiting Stampede took a 1-0 lead.
Second-period goals from Pelosi at 5:04 and Jaksen Panzer at 9:04 made a 3-0 Sioux Falls lead. Waterloo's John Mustard, the top-scoring rookie in the league, got his 12th of the year and after two periods the Stampede led 3-1.
Gavyn Thoreson pulled the Black Hawks within one at 11:14, but Hendrickson closed the game out with an empty-net tally at 18:34.
Michael Chambre stopped 25 shots to pick up the win for Sioux Falls.
Lincoln 5, Cedar Rapids 1
Jared Mangan had a hand in four of five goals with two goals and pair of assists in leading Lincoln to a 5-1 win at Cedar Rapids Friday night.
Blake Montgomery's goal at 8:55 opened the scoring in the game as the Stars took a 1-0 lead. Ryan Philbrick's first career USHL goal evened the score, but Martin Masa responded with his first goal as a USHLer at 19:35 and at the end of the first, Lincoln held a 2-1 lead.
At 1:47 of the second, Mangan scored his eighth of the year and when Keaton Peters tallied at 13:41, the Stars held a 4-1 lead at the end of two periods of action.
Mangan added an insurance tally when he scored at 6:17 of the third.
Lucas Massie had 24 saves to record the win for the Stars.
Action in the USHL continues Saturday night with seven games on the docket.
