Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
BUFFALO, NY (April 6, 2019) - It was a large lead for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders entering the bottom of the fourth inning, but a ferocious comeback put Buffalo ahead in the blink of an eye, and they didn't look back after jumping ahead 10-8 in the fifth - winning by that very same margin.
Offensively, the RailRiders put pressure on the Bisons early with a run in the top of the first inning. Outfielder Trey Amburgery doubled down the leftfield line on the very first pitch of the game against the Toronto Blue Jays' No. 8 prospect, Sean Reid-Foley. A wild pitch from Reid-Foley put Amburgey at third base for Mandy Alvarez, who stroked a fly ball to left field for a 1-0 lead.
The Bisons responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, and that 2-1 lead held until the top of the third inning when Mike Ford responded with a two-run homer of his own. At that point SWB led 3-2, but an unearned run in the bottom of the third off RailRiders starting pitcher Chance Adams made it 3-3.
Adams was making his first start of the season and lasted 3.0 IP and appeared in the fourth but didn't retire any of the first three men he faced to reach before being lifted for Raynel Espinal. All told, the righty allowed six runs (four earned runs) in those 3.0 innings and struck out four on 80 pitches while getting a no-decision.
In the fourth inning, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored five times to take the lead, but Buffalo responded with four runs of their own to make it an 8-7 game. One inning later, Buffalo scored three more times to take the 10-8 lead which was the final score thanks to strong bullpen work by Buffalo. The reliever trio of Jordan Romano, Derek Law and Danny Barnes combined to throw the final 6.0 innings and allow just one hit while not allowing a run to secure the win.
Amburgey paced the offense with a 4-for-5 performance and is now batting .571 over the first three games of his Triple-A career (8-for-14). Gosuke Katoh got his second start of the season and recorded his first career Triple-A hit - a three-run homer that he launched as part of SWB's five-run fourth inning.
The RailRiders get back to action Sunday afternoon with a matinee affair against the Bisons looking to come away with a win in Game 4 and a split of the four-game series. RHP David Hale takes the ball for SWB against Buffalo's RHP Clay Buchholz who is on rehab assignment for the Toronto Blue Jays. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. with pregame coverage at 12:35 p.m. on the RailRiders Radio Network with Adam Marco and Adam Giardino.
