Big hits and Scribner's gem lead 'Cats to victory

Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - A quality start by right-hander Troy Scribner, combined with an early offensive explosion, propelled the Tri-City ValleyCats to a 9-5 road victory over the Williamsport Crosscutters on Saturday night.

Scribner (4-1) became the first Tri-City pitcher to pitch six full innings this season, and was quite effective in those six frames, allowing only one hit and no runs.

The Washington Depot, CT native retired the Crosscutters in order in four of his six innings en route to striking out seven batters. That extends his New York-Penn League-leading strikeout total to 38.

While Scribner's shutdown pitching held the Williamsport in check early, the ValleyCats bats also did more than their share in the victory, tying a season-high with 17 hits.

Third baseman J.D. Davis got the hitting and the scoring started in the top of the first inning by hitting a 3-2 pitch from Williamsport RHP Alejandro Arteaga over the centerfield wall for his team-leading fifth home run of the season.

First baseman A.J. Reed then followed up the homer with a double, before scoring on an RBI single by Nick Tanielu.

The 'Cats continued the scoring in the second inning, when Terrell Joyce led off with a double, and then scored on a single by Alfredo Gonzalez. Then in the third frame, Davis led off with a double, which was followed by a double by Reed, then another RBI single by Tanielu, as the ValleyCats led 5-0 before the end of the third.

The Crosscutters were able to get into the scoring column once Scribner left the game, as they scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the 'Cats lead to 6-4. However, Tri-City scored three in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI single by Alex Hernandez and a two-run triple by Derek Fisher to put the game out of reach.

Tri-City reliever Ryan Thompson pitched a one-two-three ninth inning to seal the victory, as the ValleyCats advanced to 19-10 on the season. With the win, they extending their lead in the Stedler Divison standings to six games over the second place Connecticut Tigers.

After yet another strong offensive output, the ValleyCats now lead the New York-Penn League in runs scored, walks, hits and batting average. And similar to so many of the 'Cats victories this season, Saturday night's game was a complete team effort. The middle of the order certainly did a lot of damage, with Davis going 3-5 with a double and a home run, and Reed going 2-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. But the heralded Tri-City power hitters were far from the only contributors, as Bobby Boyd (3-5 with a RBI and one stolen base), Tanielu (2-5, 2RBI), Joyce (2-3 with a double and two runs) and Gonzalez (2-4) also contributed multi-hit games, and nine 'Cats batters knocked at least one base hit.

Tri-City will look to take game two of this three-game series tomorrow at 5:05pm against the Crosscutters. Getting the start for the 'Cats will be RHP Francis Ramirez (1-3, 6.14), with LHP Matt Imhof (0-0, 1.29) on the bump for Williamsport.

After the series concludes on Monday, Tri-City will have an off day before heading home to Joseph L. Bruno Stadium to take on the Aberdeen IronBirds on Wednesday, July 16th to start a six-game homestand.
