Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY --- Tyler Filliben tied the game with a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning and Kevin Ross scored a game-ending run on a Fernand Cruzado wild pitch as the Jamestown Jammers rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Diethrick Park.
The Lake Monsters had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth when John Nogowski was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a Max Kuhn single to right and then scored one out later on a Yairo Munoz RBI single to right field. Vermont had a chance to plate an insurance run after Kyle Wheeler walked to load the bases, but Brett Veritgan hit into a forceout at home and Dayton Alexander popped out to end keep the lead at 2-1.
The Jammers got their first two batters on base in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Blake McMullen (1-1) as Michael Suchy reached on a throwing error by shortstop Munoz and Chase Simspon walked. Cruzado came on and got Ross to bunt into a forceout at third base for the first out, but Filliben then doubled home Simpson to tie the game and move Ross to third base. Cruzado then uncorked a wild pitch with Deybi Garcia batting to end the game and hand Vermont its sixth straight loss at Diethrick dating back to their last win on August 13, 2010.
Vermont starter Jerad Grundy was outstanding over six scoreless innings of work, allowing just two hits with one walk and two strikeouts. The left-hander retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced (only hitter to reach was on a Grundy throwing error) and after a one-out walk in the fourth got Suchy to hit into an inning-ending double play. The only hits allowed by Grundy came on a one-out Ross single in the fifth and Jordan Luplow two-out single in sixth.
Joe Bennie had two of the Lake Monsters five hits, including an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning to plate Dayton Alexander for a 1-0 lead. The Jammers tied the game in the seventh as Suchy led off with a double, moved to third on a flyout and scored on a Jordan Schwartz wild pitch. Both Jamestown and Vermont pitching staffs, which entered the game having allowed the second and third-most hits in the league this season, both gave up just five hits in the contest.
The Lake Monsters and Jammers continue the three-game series on Sunday starting at 4:05 pm and close out the series at Monday at 7:05 pm. After an off day on Tuesday, the Lake Monsters will open a six-game homestand at historic Centennial Field on Wednesday.
