Better Luck For Davidson In Travs 4-3 Win

Dickey-Stephens Park, North Little Rock, AR - Over his first six starts, LHP Daniel Davidson (2-4) had bee the picture of a tough-luck pitcher. He held the Texas League's fifth lowest ERA (1.92), but had won just one start. Monday morning against Springfield, Davidson got all the offense he needed early and dealt seven innings in the Arkansas Travelers (15-22) 4-3 victory over the Springfield Cardinals (15-20). Davidson allowed two runs on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts earning revenge for a 1-0 loss to the Cardinals on May 5. Travs RF Matt Pali banged a two-run homer (3) in the fourth inning pushing their lead to 4-0. Springfield came back and had the go-ahead runs on base in the ninth inning, but RHP Jose Arreondo struck out two for his fifth save.

Springfield starter LHP Jaime Garcia (1-3) took the loss allowing four runs over five innings on seven base hits and two walks. Travs SS Sean Rodriguez got things going with a second-inning leadoff double to left field. 1B Mike Collins pushed him to third with a sacrifice bunt, then Rodriguez scored when Springfield C Bryan Anderson dropped a pitch for a passed ball.

With one out in the fourth inning, Collins doubled to left and took third on a wild pitch. With the Cardinals infield playing up, Travs C Flint Wipke singled off Garcia's foot chasing in Collins for a 2-0 lead. Then Pali homered into the Travs' bullpen past right field for a 4-0 lead.

Davidson breezed through the first four innings allowing just two singles. Wipke caught 1B Mike Ferris stealing in the third inning after Davidson struck out Tyler Greene looking. Then when LF Sean Danielson led off the fourth with a shot past third base, LF Aaron Peel picked up the ricochet and threw him out attempting for a double.

Springfield DH Juan Richardson singled past third base to begin the fifth and RF Joe Mather singled to center. Anderson then ripped a shot down the first-base line for an RBI double that sent Mather to third base. With the infield back, 2B Jarrett Hoffpauir grounded to short scoring Mather to get Springfield within two runs.

Davidson stayed on for two more innings and set down six of the last seven batters he faced. Fuller made a diving catch robbing 3B Juan Lucena in the sixth, and 3B Freddy Sandoval stabbed a hard grounder before throwing out Mather in the seventh.

RHP Aaron Pullin came on to hold Springfield off the bases in the eighth inning before Arredondo relieved in the ninth. He went to a full count on Colby Rasmus before allowing a home run to right bringing the Cardinals with 4-3. Richardson then singled bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with no outs. Arredondo struck out Mather then walked Anderson, and the Cards sent Jon Jay to pinch hit for Hoffpauir. Arredondo struck him out on three pitches and ended the game when Ferris bounced to second.

Time of game was 2:30 and the paid attendance 8,348.

The Travs and Cardinals get back to night baseball Tuesday at Dickey-Stephens Park. Arkansas has RHP Nick Adenhart (3-2, 2.55 ERA) pitching against the Cardinals RHP Jose Garcia (1-2, 5.59 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the gates open at 6:10 p.m.
