Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - San Antonio starting pitcher Roger Deago showed Monday that he's more than just a good pitcher. The Panamanian southpaw can also hit, and his talents both on the hill and at the plate carried the Missions to an easy 8-0 win over the Hooks in the second game of this series.
Deago (2-1) tossed 5.1 innings of shutout ball, limiting the Hooks to two singles and a walk while striking out seven. At the dish, Deago went 2-for-2 with an RBI. His one-out single to left in the third was the first hit off Hooks starter Felipe Paulino (0-2), and in the fourth, his single to left-center plated Will Venable from second to give San Antonio a 2-0 lead.
Deago had plenty of help. Three members of the bullpen combined on 3.2 innings of shutout and hitless relief. First baseman Tim Brown had a 2-for-3 night that included a two-run home run, his eighth long ball of the year. Mike Wagner added a pinch-hit, two-run homer to cap a four-run bottom of the eighth.
Paulino retired seven of the first eight men he faced and finished with four innings of work on 78 pitches. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk while striking out three. Jimmy Barthmaier, activated from the disabled list in time for Monday's game, followed Paulino and pitched in the fifth and sixth. He was charged with two earned runs on two hits and a walk. Barthmaier struck out three.
In addition to Barthmaier, catcher J.R. Towles was added to the Hooks roster Monday. Towles had played 26 games this season for Salem in the Carolina League, where he was batting .200-0-11. He did not make it to San Antonio for Monday's game, but is expected to be in uniform Tuesday night.
Catcher Kevin Davidson was promoted to Triple-A Round Rock, taking the roster spot of Danny Ardoin, who was placed on the disabled list. Also on Monday, relief pitcher Jeff Wigdahl was placed on the temporarily inactive list.
Josh Miller (1-3, 3.86) toes the slab for the Hooks in Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. start, while the Missions are expected to counter with lefty Cesar Ramos (3-2, 4.08).
