Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals were edged on Monday afternoon, losing to the Arkansas Travelers by a score of 4-3 at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.
Springfield's ninth-inning rally came up short, as the Cards fell for just the second time in six tries against Arkansas this year.
Trailing 4-2 to open the ninth, Colby Rasmus drilled a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right-center field, bringing Springfield to within a run at 4-3. Travs' closer Jose Arredondo then allowed a single to Juan Richardson, putting the tying run on base. Arredondo then struck out Joe Mather for the first out, but walked Bryan Anderson, moving the tying run into scoring position and the go-ahead run at first. Jon Jay then pinch hit for Jarrett Hoffpauir and struck out on three pitches for the second out. Mike Ferris grounded out to end the game, giving Arredondo his fifth save of the year.
Cards' starter Jaime Garcia (1-3) gave up four runs in five innings, suffering his second straight loss. The Travs got a run in the second and then three more in the fourth, going up 4-0. Matt Pali capped the three-run inning, blasting his third homer of the year to right field, giving Arkansas a four-run advantage.
Travs' starter Daniel Davidson (2-4) was impressive, working six strong innings on Monday afternoon. He faced the minimum through the first four innings, but finally got touched up in the fifth. Trailing 4-0, the Cards opened the fifth with three straight hits. After Richardson and Mather singled, Bryan Anderson picked up an RBI double, making it 4-1. Jarrett Hoffpauir's RBI groundout made it 4-2.
Nick Webber and Matt Scherer combined for three scoreless innings to keep the deficit at just two runs.
Colby Rasmus extended his hitting streak to ten straight with his ninth-inning homer, his sixth of the year. Jon Jay's ten-game hitting streak ended, going 0-1 by striking out in the ninth.
Springfield drops to 15-20 with the loss, now three and a half games back in the North Division. The Cards will send Jose Garcia (1-2) to the bump on Tuesday evening, in the third game of the four-game set from North Little Rock. The Travs will send highly-touted right-hander Nick Adenhart (3-2) to the mound, as he makes his first appearance against the Redbirds. Game time on Tuesday night is 7:10pm.
