Drillers Edge Wranglers
May 14, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
On one of the nicest nights of the 2007 baseball season, four different Drillers pitchers held the visiting Wichita Wranglers to one run, scattering seven hits, and striking out five to give Tulsa a 2-1 victory Monday night at Drillers Stadium. The victory increased the first-place Drillers lead in the Texas League's North Division standings to 1 ½ games over the second-place Wranglers.
Tulsa jumped out to an early 1-0 lead Monday on a Christian Colonel RBI single to right that scored Jonathan Herrera.
Wichita countered in the third inning when Wranglers center fielder Adam Greenburg hit a solo home run over the right field fence tying the score at 1-1.
The Drillers rallied to regain the lead in the bottom of the third on an Aaron Rifkin single that plated Herrera, who had doubled earlier in the inning. Herrera's second run of the game gave Tulsa a 2-1 lead.
Tulsa reliever Matt Daley, making only his second professional start, pitched three innings giving up the one run while only allowing three hits. Judd Songster (2-2), who picked up his second win of the season, worked three scoreless relief innings before being replaced by Juan Morillo. The hard-throwing right-hander threw two scoreless innings, striking out three.
Closer Steven Register picked up his 13th save of the season by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Register is now a perfect 13 for 13 in save opportunities this season.
Wranglers starting pitcher Carlos Rosa (1-1) picked up his first loss of the season. Rosa surrendered two runs on five hits in five innings of work.
Tulsa and Wichita will continue their four-game series Tuesday evening at Drillers Stadium. Greg Reynolds (3-1, 1.66 ERA) will start for the Drillers while the Wranglers will counter with Dusty Hughes (1-2, 2.88 ERA). Octavio Dotel, on an injury rehabilitation assignment from the Kansas City Royals, will also pitch one inning for the Wranglers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM.
