Everett AquaSox News Release

Spokane, Washington - Prelander Berroa struck out nine batters and allowed only one hit through five innings and three relief pitchers combined to throw four scoreless innings as the Everett AquaSox (17-23) shutout the Spokane Indians (23-17), 4-0.

Berroa and Spokane starting pitcher Evan Shawver were both outstanding early as the game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. Justin Lavey stoked a two-out double until left field and then scored one batter later when Victor Labrada singled into right field to put the AquaSox on top 1-0. The AquaSox added a second run when Labrada singled again in the eighth inning, driving in Alberto Rodriguez. James Parker then stepped to the plate and hit a line drive double into the gap in right center field that drove home Lavey and Rodriguez to expand the AquaSox lead to 4-0.

Four AquaSox pitchers combined for the shutout. Berroa pitched the first five innings and picked up his first victory for the AquaSox since being acquired by the Seattle Mariners from the San Francisco Giants on May 11th. Mike Mokma threw a scoreless sixth inning followed by Luis Curvelo who pitched two shutout innings. Curvelo did make things interesting though as he managed to work himself out of a jam in the seventh inning when Spokane loaded the bases with only one out before he struck out Bladimir Restituyo and then got Cristopher Navarro to ground into a force out to end the scoring threat. Kyle Hill pitched a shutout ninth to preserve the shutout.

Justin Lavey recorded his 10th multi-hit game in the month of May. His numbers through 17 games played this month: .385 batting average, 15 runs, seven doubles, one triple, one home run, 12 RBI. Alberto Rodriguez is now five-for-nine with two doubles over his last two games. Victor Labrada extended his hitting streak to four games. James Parker now has a six-game hitting streak. The loss snapped Spokane's five game winning streak. The AquaSox ended a seven-game road losing streak.

Game four of the six game series is scheduled for Friday May 26. LHP Brayan Perez (2-1, 4.91 ERA) will make his third start for the AquaSox this season and fifth appearance overall. RHP Will Ethridge (2-2, 2.78 ERA) will make his seventh start of the season for Spokane. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., the pre-game show begins at 6:20 p.m. on 1380 AM/95.3 FM KRKO.
