Rochester Red Wings News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - Jose Berrios struck out nine batters over 7.0 scoreless innings as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Charlotte Knights 3-0 Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark.

Eight of Berrios' nine strikeouts were swinging as he surrendered just five hits and one walk. Only one man reached third base against him as improved to 3-1.

Berrios had a lead before even throwing a pitch as Oswaldo Arcia hit a two-run homer in the first against Knights starter Erik Johnson (8-8). Arcia was 2-for-his-last-38 before the at-bat and hadn't homered since July 16.

That was all the support Berrios would need. He had two 1-2-3 innings but faced the minimum in two others. His only looking strikeout was of Drew Garcia on a backdoor breaking ball on a 3-2 pitch to end his night in the seventh. The nine punchouts match a Triple-A high set on July 18. He has fanned at least eight batters in four of his seven Triple-A outings.

Byron Buxton finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base. He walked and stole second on the first pitch to the next batter, James Beresford, in the sixth before scoring on a bloop hit by Beresford.

The shutout marked the 14th by Rochester this season, best in the league. Mark Hamburger threw a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout and has now tossed 14.0 straight scoreless innings. Michael Tonkin worked a scoreless ninth to secure his 10th save. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
