Rochester Red Wings News Release
SYRACUSE, NY - To say that Jose Berrios was terrific on Sunday night would be an understatement. The 22-year-old right-hander needed just 87 pitches to throw his second career nine-inning complete as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Syracuse Chiefs 5-2 Sunday night at NBT Bank Stadium.
The Red Wings (50-35) actually trailed twice early in the game as the Chiefs (37-46) scored a run in each of the first two innings. In the opening frame, Trea Turner singled to lead off the game, stole second, advance to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. Kennys Vargas homered the next half inning, his second in as many days, off Austin Voth (4-5) to tie the game at one apiece.
Rochester product Chris Bostick doubled to open the bottom of the second and later scored on a two-out error to give the Chiefs their second lead.
The score remained the same until Tommy Field and Adam Brett Walker hit back-to-back home runs to begin the fifth and the Red Wings had their first lead at 3-2. Jorge Polanco would add an RBI single with two outs in the frame to extend the lead to 4-2. Logan Schafer drove in a run with a two-out bunt single in the ninth to cap the scoring.
That's all the support Berrios would need as he retired Syracuse in order in five of his nine innings while facing just three batters in two other innings. He faced three over the minimum while throwing just 20 of his 87 pitches out of the strikezone.
Rochester reached 50 wins in the team's 85th game for the first time since the 1990 Red Wings also started 50-35. That team won an Orioles-era (1961-2002) high 89 games.
Every Wings player reached base safely at least once while Schafer was the only Red Wing with two hits.
