Chiefs Drop Weekend Finale to Red Wings, 5-2

Syracuse, NY (July 3rd, 2016) - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 5-2, in the final game of a home-and-home series. Rochester starter Jose Berrios threw a complete game, handing the Chiefs a loss in their final home game before the All-Star break.

Syracuse (37-46) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Trea Turner led off with a line-drive single into right field off Berrios. The speedy shortstop then stole second base and moved to third base on a groundout in the next at-bat. Brian Goodwin hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the ensuing at-bat, scoring Turner to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Rochester (50-35) answered quickly in the second inning. Kennys Vargas led off with a home run to right field off Syracuse starter Austin Voth, evening the score at one.

The Chiefs crossed the plate again in the bottom of the frame. Christopher Bostick opened the inning with a double to left field. Following a strikeout, Bostick advanced to third on a groundout. Caleb Ramsey hit a ground ball to shortstop in the ensuing at-bat, but reached on a throwing error by Tommy Field. Bostick scored on the errant throw to give the Chiefs a 2-1 advantage.

The Red Wings got back on the board in the fifth. Field and Adam Brett Walker led off with back-to-back home runs, both to left field. The home runs were their fifth and 16th, respectively. After an out, John Ryan Murphy singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch from Voth. James Beresford then walked, putting runners on first and second with one out. Logan Schafer flied out in the following at-bat to move Murphy to third with two outs. Jorge Polanco drove home Murphy with a single to right an at-bat later, putting Rochester on top, 4-2, after five innings.

Rochester tacked on an insurance run in the ninth off reliever Rafael Martin. With one out, former Chief Darin Mastroianni singled to right field. Following a pop out, Beresford singled Mastroianni to third base on a hit-and-run play. Schafer followed with a bunt single to the left side for the game's final run.

Berrios was terrific in victory for the Red Wings. He surrendered four hits and two runs (one earned), struck out seven and walked none, tossing a scant 87 pitches, of which 67 were strikes.

The Chiefs begin a seven-game road trip leading into the All-Star break Monday night at 6:05 at Durham. In the first of a four-game series, the Chiefs will send right-hander Jaron Long to the mound against Bulls right-hander Jaime Schultz.
