Bergman Settling into Life in Belleville
October 30, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Belleville Senators News Release
It can be daunting to have to join a new team after becoming so acclimated with where you were.
But when Julius Bergman was traded to the Senators organization on June 19 as part of the Mike Hoffman trade with San Jose, Bergman quickly found the transition might be a lot easier due to some familiar faces, and fellow countrymen, in Swedes Andreas Englund, Filip Gustavsson and Marcus Hogberg.
"I knew Hoggy and Andreas before from Sweden as we had played together before at the U18 and U20 level for Sweden," Bergman said. "They're both great people and it's fun to have them here."
And the familiar faces continued to roll in on Sept. 13 when his former teammate in San Jose, Rudolfs Balcers, was acquired in the mammoth Erik Karlsson trade.
"Rudolfs is a great guy," Bergman said. "We were friends in San Jose and hung out a lot while we played out there so I was happy when I saw that he had been traded here."
On the ice, Bergman has tallied an assist in nine games with the Senators. In 199 career AHL games split between Belleville and San Jose, the 22-year-old has 16 goals and 46 assists.
In Belleville, he's been paired with fellow Swedish defenceman Englund as the pair continue to find confidence playing alongside one another.
"It's great playing with Julius," Englund said. "He's great with the puck and I think that we complete each other in a good way. Him being a Swede is a fun coincidence but it also quickly made us friends off the ice which helps too."
Bergman concurs.
"We understand each other out there," he said. "On the ice and off of it he's a great guy and we seem to have a great connection while playing together."
As for the transition from the year-long heat in California to the cold winters that is rapidly approaching in Belleville, Bergman says he's settling in well to life in Ontario.
"My girlfriend and I like it so far. We've moved into our house and got everything set, the rink is nice.
"It's a nice set-up for us here. So far, so good."
