Providence Bruins News Release
Providence Bruins center Patrice Bergeron has been named the CCM Vector AHL Player of the Week for the period ending November 21. Bergeron tallied three goals and six assists for nine points in three games over the weekend, as the Bruins posted a 2-0-1-0 record, taking five of a possible six points. The 19-year-old native of Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec had two assists in Friday night's 4-2 victory over the Springfield Falcons, before leading the team's offensive explosion in a 7-1 win at Portland the next night. Bergeron scored two goals, one shorthanded and one on the power play, while adding three assists. His five-point output was a career-high, and along with Andy Hilbert (1-4-5), matched the AHL's single-game high for the season. Bergeron wrapped up the weekend by scoring a goal and assisting on another in Sunday's 4-3 overtime loss to Philadelphia. Bergeron (7-11-18) and Hilbert (10-8-18) are tied for second on the Bruins and 10th in AHL scoring.
The five-point weekend for the Bruins moved the team further up in the tight Atlantic Division standings. Providence is 7-6-2-2 (18 points), putting them in fifth place in the division, one point behind the Portland Pirates and Worcester IceCats. The Providence special teams units continue to excel, as both rank among the AHL's top-five. The power play ranks third in the league, clicking at a 21.5% success rate (17/79), while the penalty killing unit ranks fourth at 89.5% (77/86). The Bruins also lead the league with an average of 35 shots on goal per game.
The weekend's games also saw the Bruins reach new heights offensively for the season. They poured 53 shots on goal in Friday's 4-2 win over Springfield, the most shots the team has had in a game this season. The shot total was the most by a Bruins team since May 18, 2001, when they had 51 in a 3-3 tie against Syracuse. The franchise record is 66, set on April 4, 1997 (3-2 loss to Worcester) and February 25, 2000 (5-1 win over St. John's).
Saturday night's seven goal outburst marked a new season-high for the Black and Gold, and was the most by a Bruin team since a 7-4 win at St. John's on March 1, 2003.
The Bruins begin a four-game week on Wednesday, November 24, when they visit the Philadelphia Phantoms at 7:05 p.m. They return home to host the Norfolk Admirals on Friday, November 26 at 7:05 p.m., before hitting the road for the remainder of the weekend. The Bruins take on the Lowell Lock Monsters on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and the Hartford Wolf Pack on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m.
Bruin fans can see center and leading scorer Brad Boyes on WNAC Fox 64's "Sports Wrap" tonight at 10:45 p.m. He will be a featured guest for show host Patrick Little. Boyes, 22, is tied for seventh in AHL scoring with 8-12-20 totals in 17 games.
