Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. â The Springfield Falcons, American Hockey League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, today announced that defenseman Nikos Tselios has been loaned to the club by the Utah Grizzlies. In exchange, the Falcons have loaned defenseman Terry Virtue to Utah.
Tselios, 25, has registered a goal and an assist as well as four penalty minutes (PIM) in five games with Utah this season. The 6-5, 226-pound native of Oak Park, Illinois returns to Springfield where he spent all of last season and 13 games during the 2002-03 campaign. Tselios recorded 13 points (5g, 8a) and 105 PIM in 75 games with the Falcons last season.
Tselios was the Carolina Hurricanes' first selection (1st round, 22nd overall) in 1997 NHL Entry Draft. In 223 career games in the AHL, Tselios has posted 48 points (13g, 35a) and 249 PIM.
Virtue registered two points (1g, 1a) and 21 PIM in 13 games with the Falcons this season. The 34-year-old signed an AHL contract with the Falcons this summer after spending the two previous seasons with the Worcester IceCats.
Today's transaction follows a deal in which the Falcons received center Jason Jaspers from Utah and assigned center Jarrod Skalde to the Grizzlies on Saturday. The Falcons also announced the signing of veteran left wing Derek Bekar on Saturday. Bekar, who scored 24 goals with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last season, must clear waivers prior to joining the Falcons due to his beginning the season with Dundee of the British National League.
Tselios is expected to join the Falcons in time for the team's next game versus the Hershey Bears at the GIANT Center on Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Tune into The ZONE â Sports Radio 640 or click on the MassLive.com CyberCast link on the Falcons' official web site, www.falconsahl.com to hear the live action. The Falcons next home game is this Saturday when the Manchester Monarchs will visit Springfield.
