PORTLAND, Ore. - Craig Stansberry hit a three-run homer and Royce Huffman later broke a tie game with a two-run single in the seventh in the Portland Beavers' 6-4 victory over the Las Vegas 51s Monday night at PGE Park.
The Beavers (53-77) built an early 4-0 lead, allowed the 51s (59-71) to tie the game with a four-run seventh before loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh for Huffman, whose two-out single through the middle plated Paul McAnulty and Brady Clark with the go-ahead runs.
Clark was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored for the Beavers, who have won four of their last six games.
Reliever Aaron Rakers (4-5), who ranks second in the Pacific Coast League with 55 appearances, worked 1 1/3 innings for his fourth win. Jared Wells closed the door in the ninth to notch his fifth save.
Brian Akin gave up the seventh-inning damage to take the loss for the 51s, who have lost three of their last four.
Backed by a four-run lead, Portland starter Mike Thompson was relatively untested through six scoreless innings before Delwyn Young launched a leadoff solo homer in the seventh, his 17th clout of the season. With two outs in the frame, Wilson Valdez added an RBI single and Luis Maza tied the game with a two-run double to left.
Clark and Peter Ciofrone kept the first inning alive with back-to-back, two-out singles up the middle, and Stansberry belted his 13th home run to put the Beavers ahead 3-0.
Stansberry led off the fourth with a single and scored on Keoni Ruth's RBI double to the corner in left for a four-run advantage.
The Beavers and 51s close out the series Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Stansberry has home runs in four of his last nine games ... the Beavers have five home games remaining in the 2007 campaign.
