Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nashville Sounds outfielder Laynce Nix has been named the Pacific Coast League's Batter-of-the-Week for the August 13-19 period.
The 26-year-old led all league hitters with a .550 batting average (11-for-20), five home runs, and a 1.450 slugging percentage over the seven-game span. He ranked second in the circuit with 12 RBIs and seven extra-base hits during the stanza.
Nix has homered in his last five games, the longest such streak by a Sounds player since John Wehner established a club record by going deep in six consecutive contests from July 1-5, 1999.
The Midland, Texas native is currently riding a season-best eight-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .515 (17-for-33), and has led the Nashville offense to its best monthly average of the season in August by batting a team-best .382 (21-for-55) with 15 RBIs in 14 games this month.
For the season, Nix is batting .264 (80-for-303) with 20 home runs and 61 RBIs in 81 games for Nashville.
His award is the fourth accumulated by a Sounds player during the 2007 season but the first by a Nashville hitter in three years. Current Milwaukee Brewer Corey Hart was the last Sound to earn a PCL Batter-of-the-Week nod, claiming the honor during the August 1-7, 2005 period.
Three Sounds pitchers have been previously honored by the PCL this season. Top prospect Yovani Gallardo took home the PCL Pitcher-of-the-Week award for the May 14-20 period. Left-hander Manny Parra snagged the June 25-July 1 honor after hurling the third nine-inning perfect game in PCL history. Seth McClung was recognized as the circuit's top hurler last week (August 6-12).
Nix will take aim at belting a home run in a team-record-tying sixth consecutive contest when the Sounds continue their road series in Round Rock this evening at 7:05 p.m. CT.
