Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA - What a difference a day can make. A night after a combined two runs and 10 hits were tallied in 2-0 victory for Fresno, the Grizzlies and Bees did battle to a whole different tune.
It was the Grizzlies who led the charge for the turn of the tide with a 13-hit attack on the Bees in a 9-5 victory Sunday. Fresno (67-62) slammed nine extra-base hits against Salt Lake (67-61) pitching, including two home runs, one by catcher Eliezer Alfonzo (3) and the other by third baseman Tomas De La Rosa (8).
Alfonzo has now hit in all seven games played in as a Grizzly while on rehab for the San Francisco Giants. The first three batters in Fresno's lineup, Justin Leone, Luis Figueroa and De La Rosa, each scored two runs for the Grizzlies.
For the second time in three days, Figueroa missed the cycle by just a hit, this time a home run, as he came through with a double, single and triple, respectively. Previously, Figueroa missed the cycle by a double.
Fresno starter Matt Palmer (10-8) became the latest Grizzlies starter to reach the 10-win plateau as he went seven innings, allowing only two earned runs while striking out three Bees batters.
The story of the night proved to be Fresno's Lance Niekro, who took the mound for the first time in his career, allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning pitched. In his first outing, Niekro threw 74 mph fastballs, although his go-to pitch proved to be his 60-64 mph knuckleball, a pitch used by his Hall of Fame uncle Phil and his late father Joe.
Fresno and Salt Lake will continue their series tomorrow for Monday Madness (presented by Wienerschnitzel) as fans can get 2 tickets, 2 hot dogs and 2 sodas for just $14. It will also be Faith & Family Night at Chukchansi Park, which will feature Hawk Nelson live in concert before the game in the Tulare Plaza.
Tickets for the final two Grizzlies home games are available at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, over the phone at 559-320-TIXS, or online at www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
