Tucson Scores Six in Final Two Innings to Top Sky Sox

Tucson, AZ - The Sidewinders came from a 3-0 deficit and staved off late rallies from the Sky Sox to win 7-6 on Monday night. Tucson scored six runs in their last two innings including a bases-loaded double by CF Rich Thompson to secure the win. LHP Bill Murphy went 7 strong innings, allowing only 2 earned runs. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run.

The Sky Sox struck early with an unearned run in the top of the first. 2B Jayson Nix reached on an infield single and advanced home on a throwing error and two singles to give Colorado Springs the 1-0 lead.

Colorado Springs doubled their tally with a run in the second. RF Alexis Gomez doubled on a ball that bounced off third base. He scored two batters later on a GIDP to give the Sky Sox a 2-0 lead.

Nix scored again in the third inning after doubling and coming around on a LF Jolbert Cabrera single.

The Sidewinders got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when LHP Bill Murphy helped his cause by slapping a base hit to left. The hit scored SS Matt Erickson from second. Tucson then loaded the bases up with two outs but LF Jarred Ball flew out to strand all three runners and keep the score at 3-1.

Murphy finished up his night by striking out the side in the top of the seventh on nine pitches.

The Sidewinders brought home three unearned runs in the bottom half of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. With two outs and two on, CF Rich Thompson reached on an error that scored one and LF Jarred Ball lined a base hit to right scoring two more.

In the top of the eighth, the Sky Sox regained the league with two runs on back-to-back hits by 1B Joe Koshansky and C Chris Iannetta.

The Sidewinders got both runs back plus one extra in the bottom half of the frame. The tying run came on a C Mark Johnson single to right. The team then loaded the bases with two outs for the second time in the game, only this time Thompson doubled in two more runs giving Tucson a 7-5 lead.

The Sky Sox scored a run in the bottom of the ninth but came up short, 7-6, in the final.

Quentin started in rightfield on a rehab assignment and went 1-for-4.
