Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ON - The Brampton Beast announced today the acquisition of defenseman Antoine Corbin from the Evansville Icemen in exchange for future considerations. Last season, Corbin scored 19 points and added 142 shots on goal with 83 penalty minutes in 58 games split between the Icemen, Gwinnett Gladiators and Cincinnati Cyclones.
"We felt we needed more depth on our backend." Beast Head Coach Brent Hughes said. "Corbin is very smart defensively. He brings an all around game and moves the puck very well. He will be an asset on our penalty kill."
The 6' 3", 206-pound native of Granby, Quebec began his major junior career with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. In his second year with the team, he was traded to the Prince Albert Raiders where he went on to post 25 points and 81 penalty minutes in 45 games. Corbin finished his WHL career with 70 points (25 goals, 43 assists) with 265 penalty minutes in 189 regular season games.
"I'm happy to be back in Canada. I played in Hamilton for a year and love Ontario." said Antoine Corbin. "I hope to contribute on both sides of the ice and have a positive impact on the power play and penalty kill." Corbin, who can move the puck quick and provide a physical presence, has not formally played with anyone on the current Beast roster.
Corbin began his professional career two years ago with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL, and has also spent time with the San Francisco Bulls. The 22-year-old defenseman did not play in either of the Icemen's first two games this season.
In other Beast news, the ECHL announced defenseman Andrew Darrigo has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions Sunday against Toledo.
Darrigo was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for slashing under Rule #61.5 at 12:00 of the second period. He is fined and suspended under Rule #28 - Supplementary Discipline. Darrigo will miss Brampton's games at Elmira on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Player's Association, player fines collected by the ECHL are given to the PHPA for its ECHL Player's Hardship Fund.
The Beast will make their first road trip of the season this weekend when they travel to Elmira, New York to take on the Jackals Friday, October 31st and Saturday, November 1st. Fans can listen to both games at 7:05pm/EST free at 4cornersradio.ca
The next home series starts Thursday November 6 when they take on the Quad City Mallards at 7:00 pm. The Beast saddle up for the second game of the series when they bring country night to the Powerade Centre for an evening of prizes, giveaways and country music. On Sunday, the Beast will be wearing their specialty Remembrance Day jerseys, which will be auctioned off live following the game.
