Tulsa Oilers News Release
WICHITA, KS - Through the first two games of the season, the Tulsa Oilers piled up 15 goals and never trailed. The tables were turned on Wednesday night in Wichita as Thunder goaltender Tim Boron turned aside 27 Tulsa shots to give his squad a 2-0 victory in front of 2,341 at INTRUST Bank Arena. Boron recorded the 13th shutout of his nine-year career and handed the Oilers their first loss of the young season.
The teams battled to a scoreless stalemate at the end of the first period but the Oilers were unable to overcome penalty problems in the second. With Drew Fisher already sitting in the box for holding, Tom Mele was tabbed for tripping and the Thunder were awarded a lengthy two-man advantage. Wichita center Nikita Kashirsky set up Alex Bourret who snapped a shot over the shoulder of Oilers goalie Kevin Carr to put the Thunder on the board. Bourret's first goal of the season was the sixth goal the Oilers have surrendered to an opposing power play this season.
Wichita maintained the 1-0 edge into the third period and Boron made perhaps his biggest stop of the night in the early stages of the final frame. Oilers forward Charles Lachance moved in on a breakaway but was thwarted by Boron at close range. At 9:05, Todd Hosmer fired a shot from the right wing that squeezed through the pads of Carr to give the Thunder a two-goal cushion. Hosmer's second tally of the year was more than enough insurance for the home side.
Adam Pleskach led the Oilers with six shots on goal and Carr made 24 saves in his first loss of the season. The Oilers ended the night 0-for-2 on the power play while the Thunder finished 1-for-3 on the man-advantage.
The Stone Wolf Casino Cup series is now knotted at 1-1 with the next meeting between the Oilers and Thunder slated for Sunday, November 2 at 4:05 p.m. at the BOK Center.
The Oilers are back on home ice this Friday for a Halloween tilt against the Missouri Mavericks at 7:35 p.m.
