
Bears Defeat Patriots 6-5 In The Bottom Of The Ninth

NEWARK, NJ- The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-5 at Bears' and Eagles' Riverfront Stadium on Wednesday evening. Newark broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 6-5 when designated hitter Carl Everett hit a lead off double to left center and pinch runner Dustin Smith scored on a two out broken bat single to third by third baseman Ramon Nivar.
The Patriots struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead when designated hitter Josh Pressley led off by reaching on a Bears' fielding error and scored on a two run home run to left by second baseman Teuris Olivares (2).
The Bears tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Abraham Nunez hit a lead off infield single to short and moved to second when catcher Alberto Castillo followed with a single to left. Both would then score on a two out two run double to left center by rightfielder Jay Gibbons.
Somerset broke the 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Catcher Travis Anderson led off with a single to left and moved to second when first baseman Joe Burke followed by drawing a walk. Rightfielder Noah Hall then ripped a two out two run single to right that extender his hitting streak to eleven games.
Newark added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 4-3 when Nunez hit a one out triple to right center and scored on an RBI fielder's choice to short by leftfielder Kevin Thompson.
The Patriots plated an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 5-3 when Pressley lined a one out solo home run to left (1).
The Bears tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Nunez drew a lead off walk and scored on one out game tying home run to left by Thompson (1).
Bears' reliever Byron Batson (1-1) picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one and walking none in three innings of work. Patriots' reliever Brian Henderson (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run on one hit in one inning pitched.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, May 8th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the York Revolution.
