Bears Hang On For 3-1 Win Over Patriots

NEWARK, NJ- The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-1 at Bears' and Eagles' Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Newark struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead when centerfielder Charlton Jimerson hit a one out double off the centerfield wall, advanced to third on a single to center by first baseman Michael Tucker and scored on an RBI fielder's choice ground ball to short off the bat of third baseman Ramon Nivar.

The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when designated hitter Carl Everett led off with single up the middle and came around to score on a two run home run to left center by Jimerson (2).

Somerset plated their run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 3-1 Bears when rightfielder Noah Hall led off with a single to left, moved to into scoring position on a Bears' throwing error and later scored on a double play ground ball to second.

Bears' starter Ryan Bukvich (2-0) picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on eight hits while striking out five and walking two in seven innings of work. Patriots' starter Josh Miller (0-2) suffered a complete game loss, allowing three runs on eight hits while walking none and striking out six in eight innings pitched. Bears' closer Keith Foulke pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 5th save of the year.

The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, May 8th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the York Revolution.
