NEWARK, N.J. -- Ramon Nivar's infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning scored pinch-runner Dustin Smith with the game-winning run, leading the Newark Bears to their third straight victory, a 6-5 come-from-behind win over the Somerset Patriots Wednesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Bears (7-4) started the game-winning rally in the home ninth, when Carl Everett led off with a solid double to left-center. Smith, the son of Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith, replaced Everett as the pinch-runner and moved to third on an infield ground out. With two out, Nivar hit a little dribbler up the third base line against Somerset reliever Travis Minix that he beat out, scoring Smith with the winning run.

The rally made a winning pitcher out of Byron Batson (1-1), who pitched three solid innings in relief of starter Bobby Brownlie. Batson allowed two hits and one run in his three innings of work. Brian Henderson (0-1) was the losing pitcher for the Patriots (4-7).

Kevin Thompson brought the Bears back from a 5-3 deficit when he belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. Thompson had three RBI for the evening.

Everett had three hits and Jay Gibbons had two hits, including a two-run double in the third inning. Abraham Nunez had two hits and scored three runs for Newark.

For Somerset, Teuris Olivares had a two-run homer in the top of the second inning and Josh Pressley added a solo shot in the eighth. Travis Anderson had two hits for the Patriots.

The series concludes Thursday morning with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11:05 a.m.
