Lancaster Stormers News Release
Another chilly, wet night at Citibank Park resulted in another Lancaster Barnstormers loss as Long Island's bullpen held on for the 4-2 victory Wednesday evening.
The Ducks managed to chip away at Trey Hodges (0-2) for single runs in three straight innings for a lead they never relinquished.
Vic Rodriguez led off the second with a home run down the left field line, the first against Lancaster pitching in 103 innings. Juan Francia blooped a single over the head of Amadeo Zazueta to start the third. He stole second and scored as Ray Navarrete doubled into the left field corner.
Three straight one-out singles by Raul Gonzalez, Alex Prieto and John Pachot in the fourth gave the Ducks a 3-0 lead.
The Barnstormers did everything but catch up.
Michael Campbell beat out an infield single to open the fifth inning against Ken Ray (2-0). Zazueta flied to deep right center for the first out, but Rodney Medina came through with a double over the head of left fielder Ron Davenport to score Campbell. Davenport was also tested on the next play and came up big with a diving catch on a liner by Lloyd Turner. Danny Bravo singled up the middle to score Medina to cut the lead to one, but that was as close as Lancaster could get.
Julio Manon loaded the bases on walks in the sixth. He got Zazueta to pop up a 2-1 pitch for the second out before giving way to lefty Ron Flores. Flores got a comebacker out of Medina to end the threat.
Long Island scored an insurance run in the seventh as Francia tripled into the right field corner and scored on Navarrete's ground single to left.
Bill Simas found some trouble in the ninth. He walked Medina with one out and gave up a two-out single to left by Bravo. Aaron Herr's ground ball was flagged by first baseman Rodriguez toward the hole on the right side, and Simas was able to nail down his sixth save in seven appearances.
The Barnstormers will return home on Friday to face the Camden Riversharks at 7:00. Fireworks will follow the game on Saturday, and the Barnstormers will celebrate Mother's Day with a 1:30 matinee on Sunday.
NOTES: Turner reached base more than once for the 11th straight game...Ross Peeples came on to strike out the side in the seventh inning...Lancaster has lost nine straight games at Long Island on the first road trip of the year...Seven of those games have been decided by three or fewer runs...Jason Scobie (0-0) will be on the hill for Lancaster on Thursday against lefty Randy Leek (0-2)...Game time is 6:35 pm.
