Brockton Rox News Release

(Newark, N.J. - July 31, 2011) - The Newark Bears (8-6, 31-30) posted their first shutout Sunday afternoon behind six solid innings of work from Alex Smith (7-2), besting the Brockton Rox (10-4, 36-24) 5-0 in the teams' final meeting of the regular season.

Smith scattered three hits and three walks, while striking out one on the way to a fourth straight victory in his last four starts.

Freddy Flores (5-5) went six innings in the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out one.

The Bears first got on the board on Eric McGee's RBI single that scored Ryan Walsh in the second and then doubled the lead on a McGee solo homer in the fifth.

Back-to-back hits from Danny Santiesteban and Burt Reynolds widened the lead to 4-0 for the Bears in the sixth, before a Tim Raines Jr. sacrifice fly in the seventh, capped the scoring for Newark,

A depleted Bears bullpen kept the Rox at bay in the final three frames as TJ Hose, Matt Fitton and Mikey Mehlich all notched a scoreless inning. Brockton loaded the bases in the eighth and had two on with no outs in the ninth, but failed to score in either frame.

Mehlich struck out the final three batters to end the game.

Chris Valencia continued his offensive surge, going 3-for-4. Melvin Falu also scratched two hits in the ballgame.

Brandon Watson went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, while McGee led the charge for Newark, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two batted in.

The Rox return home to Campanelli Stadium Monday night to open a three game series against the New York Federals. The week long homestand begins as Dustin Birosak takes the mound for Brockton with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
