Five First-Inning Runs Sink Tornadoes 8-2

August 1, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Rockland Boulders scored five runs in the first and added three in the fourth in an 8-2 victory at Provident Bank Park on Monday night. Shawn Gilblair allowed three hits, walked two batters and hit one in the first inning en route to his fifth loss (3-5). Will Hassett-- who started the season with the New York Federals-- earned the win (4-4), going seven innings and allowing just one run.

All three Boulders pitchers made their 2011 CanAm League Debuts in Federals uniforms. Jon Shepard gave up an unearned run in his one frame of relief (the eighth), and Kent Worthington pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Tornadoes scored their first run on a wild pitch, sending Brendon Kelliher home from third. (He had walked with one out in the fifth, and Tony Patane doubled him over.)

In the eighth, Chris Colabello led off by reaching base on an error by Mike Richard (one of two for him in the game). Mark Minicozzi singled him over to second, then Alex Trezza was hit by a pitch to load the bases against Shepard. Nick Salotti got the only Worcester RBI for the game with a ground out to second base.

Matt McDonald allowed two of the three runners he inherited from Gilblair to score, but pitched 1.2 scoreless innings. Mike Gedman, Sean Gregory and Albert Ayala all had perfect innings for their only work of the night.

Game two of the series is Tuesday morning at 11:05am. The Tornadoes will send #4 starter Ryan Lobban to the mound against Justin Fry for Rockland. Audio coverage starts at 10:50 with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM.
