New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - The New Jersey Jackals are pleased to announce that the Florida Marlins have purchased the contract of left-hander James Leverton. The 25-year-old hurler will report to the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Florida's outpost in the Single-A South Atlantic League.
A three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week, Leverton went 8-4 over 13 starts with New Jersey and ranked second in the league with a 2.38 ERA. Leverton held opponents to a .226 average and his 64 strikeouts were fifth-most in the circuit.
"It feels like I've been drafted all over again," Leverton said. "My friends and my family are happy so it's been a great day. I have been playing with some great guys here, I had some of fun, and we were fortunate to win some games."
Leverton follows outfielder Leonard Davis and infielder Argenis Reyes as Jackals who have moved back into affiliated baseball over the past eight days. Davis had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals on July 25 and Reyes was sold to the Cleveland Indians on July 31.
An eighth-round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2008 out of Texas Tech, Leverton combined to go 10-1 with a 2.75 ERA in 49 relief appearances in 2010 as he split the season between three levels in the Cubs' minor league system. He spent his first three professional seasons with the Cubs, advancing as high as Double-A Tennessee before joining the Jackals for the 2011 campaign.
Leverton is the 25th player the Jackals have sold to an affiliated organization since 2006.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
