Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums saw David Deminsky and two relievers hold the London Rippers to one run on just five hits as the Beach Bums downed the Rippers 2-1 on Sunday evening.
Traverse City jumped on top in the first inning as with two outs, Jose Vargas walked. Chase Burch came up and laced a ball down the leftfield line for a double to score Vargas and put the Beach Bums up 1-0. It was the 217th hit for Burch in a TC uniform, tying him with Steve Young for the all-time team record.
Two innings later, Traverse City would increase the lead on an unusual play as with Kyle Eveland on third, Brian Heere on second and two out, Burch grounded a ball to Stephen Cardullo at third base. Instead of throwing to first for the force out to end the inning, Cardullo went to tag Heere who was approaching him at third. Heere reversed his direction and got into a rundown long enough to allow Eveland to score before the final out of the inning, pushing the Beach Bums lead to 2-0.
Meanwhile on the mound, Deminsky (4-1) returned to his 2011 form, scattering five hits over six innings, never having multiple runners on base at the same time. Scott Dunn went two scoreless, hitless innings in relief and Scott Mueller pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save of the season.
London would tally their only run of the contest on Mark Samuelson single in the sixth that scored David Christensen.
The series wraps up on Monday with Brooks Belter (3-0, 3.48) on the mound for Traverse City against Matt Schimpf (2-1, 2.84) for the Rippers. It is a Military Monday at Wuerfel Park sponsored by the ARMY. One lucky active duty or retired military serviceman or servicewoman will be picked at random each Monday to have their seats upgraded to sit at the Traverse City Beach Bums Private Table for the duration of the game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets call 943-0100 or visit tcbeachbums.com.
